Abstract


Bahasa sangat penting untuk mencapai keharmonisan dalam masyarakat multietnis. Selain itu, Indonesia memiliki keragaman bahasa dan budaya yang melimpah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami representasi bahasa Indonesia sebagai alat yang membantu mengembangkan toleransi di masyarakat perkotaan, khususnya di kota Banyuwangi. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, dan analisis data di masyarakat perkotaan di Banyuwangi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif, dengan desain penelitian studi kasus. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahasa Indonesia tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai alat komunikasi tetapi juga sebagai simbol identitas nasional, menciptakan rasa persatuan di tengah perbedaan dalam masyarakat perkotaan. Penggunaan bahasa Indonesia dalam hubungan sosial dapat mengurangi kemungkinan konflik, meningkatkan pemahaman antara individu dari latar belakang budaya yang berbeda, dan memungkinkan diskusi yang mendalam. Selain itu, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa dukungan pendidikan, media, dan kebijakan pemerintah sangat memengaruhi upaya untuk meningkatkan toleransi melalui penggunaan bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini menekankan pentingnya memperkuat masyarakat Indonesia dan metode komunikasi di tingkat masyarakat. Penelitian ini juga memberikan bantuan praktis kepada pembuat kebijakan dalam menciptakan kebijakan bahasa yang komprehensif untuk mendukung keharmonisan sosial dalam masyarakat multietnis.
